Neem oil

Neem oil is an oil pressed from the seeds of the neem tree, widely used by home gardeners as a general-purpose organic treatment for soft-bodied pests such as aphids, spider mites and whiteflies, which are common on balcony container plants where natural predators are scarce. It works mainly by disrupting pest feeding and reproduction rather than killing insects instantly on contact.

Applying neem oil typically means diluting a concentrate with water and a small amount of mild soap, then spraying it evenly over both the top and underside of the leaves, since many pests cluster on the undersides where they are easy to miss. Because it can affect beneficial insects too, spraying in the early morning or evening, when bees and other pollinators are less active, is a common precaution.

When buying neem oil, check the concentration and mixing instructions, since overly strong dilutions can scorch leaves, especially in strong sun shortly after spraying. A common mistake is treating only visible pests once and stopping, when most infestations need repeat applications every week or two to break the pest life cycle, along with regularly checking new growth where pests often reappear first.
