Measure the usable floor before you look at a single pattern, because outdoor rugs come in a small set of fixed sizes, commonly 5 by 8, 6 by 9 and 8 by 10 feet, and a balcony is rarely close to any of them. Leave a clear margin at the door threshold and around the drain if there is one, and remember that furniture legs should sit on the rug rather than half on and half off. Wind is the last consideration and the one that gets underestimated on an upper floor: a light woven rug needs furniture, corner weights or outdoor tape to stay put.
