Material affects sustain more than volume: aluminium alloy rings long and clear and resists corrosion outdoors, while bronze and heavier alloys give a darker, shorter note. Then think about placement, which is where balcony owners get this wrong. A large chime needs clearance to swing without hitting a rail or wall, and it needs some wind but not constant exposure, because a chime in a permanent draught becomes noise rather than sound. Consider how close the neighbours are, since a 60-inch deep-tone chime carries a long way at three in the morning, and check that the top cord and hook are rated for the weight.
